Obituary for Doreen "Bonnie" Stewart

STEWART, Doreen “Bonnie” (née Bowman) RN, PHN -
(August 2, 1926 – May 12, 2023)

It is with sadness that Bonnie’s family announces her passing at Glen Hill Terrace, Whitby, at the age of 96. Her passing was on National Nurses’ Day, a profession that she was very proud to have had. She graduated from St. Michael’s School of Nursing in 1949 and went on to work in various hospitals in both Toronto and in Alberta until her marriage with Rod. After Rod’s death she returned to the University of Toronto to get her Degree in Public Health Nursing and went on to work with the North York Health Department until her retirement.

Bonnie was the only daughter of William and Josephine Bowman and is predeceased by her two brothers Cam and Ronald. She is also predeceased by husbands; Roderick McAlpine (1965) and William Stewart. (2006) She is survived by her four children; Mary Jane Untereiner, Roderick McAlpine (Tara), John McAlpine (Linda) and Margaret “Meg” McAlpine (Peter), grandchildren Caitlin Kordic (Nick), Sara Machalek (Peter), Roddy and Amelie Untereiner, Connor and Aidan Carter and great-grandchildren Camden, Carter, and Palmer Kordic and Bodhi Machalek, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She will also be remembered by her late husband Bill’s children Christopher and Meg, grandchildren Michael (Richelle), Andrew (Kaela) and Kevin Stewart as well as their mother Silvia.

Throughout Bonnie’s life, she was involved in a variety of groups and clubs with her church, profession, and just general interest and so she leaves behind many friends that she met along the way.

A big thank you to her long-time family doctor, Dr. Pamela Taylor and all the wonderful staff at Glen Hill Terrace who looked after her over this past year. Your compassion and kindness was always noted and greatly appreciated.

Funeral will be held at her parish church, St. John the Evangelist, 903 Giffard Street in Whitby on Wednesday, July 5, 2023 at 10:30am. Her ashes will be buried alongside her late husband, Roderick McAlpine, at Holy Cross Cemetery in Thornhill, privately at a later date.
