Obituary for Elena Napolitano

NAPOLITANO, Elena -

Bradimante Elena (known by all as Elena) Napolitano passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 20, 2022 at the age of 95 at Cortelucci Vaughan Hospital. Beloved wife of Luciano Napolitano for 73 years, and mother of Palmira (Giulio predeceased), Anna Maria (Tony) and Anita (Mario). She was a grandmother to 10 grandchildren and 20 great- grandchildren.

Elena was born in San Sisto dei Valdesi, a small village in Cosenza, Calabria. She was the daughter of Emilia and Biagio Scola, and second of three children. She was predeceased by her siblings, Francesca (Salvatore) Spizzirri, and her brother, Michele (Caterina) Scola.

On May 25, 1958, Luciano, known to people as Ernesto, his wife Elena and their children, Palmira, Anna Maria and Anita left their sleepy little village of San Sisto dei Valdese, in Calabria, to emigrate to Canada to seek employment and a better life.

After a long and turbulent journey, they landed in Toronto on June 6, 1958. At that time, Canada was going through a recession and it was difficult to find employment if you did not speak English.

It took a few months but Luciano was finally able to find employment thanks to the kindness of a neighbour. Elena stayed home for two years to take care of the children and then she also found employment in a factory where they made chesterfields and mattresses. Her job was physically demanding and stressful but she worked very hard and persevered despite her pain, to help provide for her family. She finally quit in 1980 because of severe rheumatoid arthritis.

After making many sacrifices, Luciano and Elena were able to save enough money for a down payment on a modest house. They spent many happy years in their home which they took great pride in and were able to enjoy well into the later years of their life.

Elena loved to plant many flowers and Luciano was an avid gardener until 90 years old. They both enjoyed many happy hours outside enjoying their labours of love—their fruitful garden and beautiful flowers.

In time Elena’s children married and she and Luciano were blessed with 10 grand-children and 20 great-grandchildren. Children, Palmira (Giulio deceased) Quintieri, Anna Maria (Tony) Cornacchia, Anita (Mario) Lanzillotta. Grandchildren, Michael (Nadine), Frank (Oriana), Tony, Marcello and Carlo (Cora) Quintieri; Francesca (Salvatore) Guinci; Paola (Jason) D’Agostino; Alfredo (Lisa) Lanzillotta, Michael (Diana) Lanzillotta, Mario (Amelia) Lanzillotta. Great grandchildren – Julian, Andrew, Ava, Joshua, Alex, Julia, Rosario, Chiara and Romeo Quintieri; Marianna and Alessandra Guinci; Marco and Matteo D’Agostino; Mario, Matthew, Olivia, Thomas, Michael, Gabriel and Simona Lanzillotta.

Over the years Elena suffered a great deal from many ailments. She was physically and emotionally strong and her life epitomized perseverance and determination. She loved her family dearly, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren and prayed many rosaries

for them every day. She will be greatly missed by her husband, Luciano, her daughters and by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

We want to thank the nurses and doctors at Cortelucci Vaughan Hospital for their kindness and compassion and care of our mother. Your kindness is much appreciated.

In addition, we want to thank the nurses, PSW’s and administrative staff at Chartwell Pine Grove Long Term Care, for their outstanding care of our mother, Elena. She considered them part of her family. Their love, patience, care, commitment, compassion and sense of humour towards our mother is deeply cherished and we will be forever grateful.
