Obituary

JACK, David Michael
(September 6, 1933 - June 6, 2021) -
“What are we but shooting stars, hoping to shine long enough to make at least one soul believe in the magic.” - Sherry Namdeo
With gratitude for his well-lived, love-filled life, we share the news of the sudden passing of Michael, ‘Mike’ Jack on June 6th at Lakeridge Hospital, Oshawa.
His spirit and presence were so large that his rapid departure has left a hole in our world.
The youngest of seven children, Michael, or ‘Mike’ was pre-deceased by his parents: Marguerite (née Slater) and Herman Jack; his brothers Von, Hilaire, Edward, Bruce, as well as his sisters Francis and Marguerite. Michael leaves behind Judith Anne, his cherished wife and companion of sixty-one years; his children David (Mary Anne), Marguerite and Jerome (Christine). Proud ‘Poppy’ to Ashley, James and Lindsay Farrell, Alex Vermey, Jennifer Earle, (née Jack) Emily Jack and his great grandchildren Maathiny and Emlyn Earle. ‘Shod’ will be lovingly remembered by his nieces Suzanne Hayes, Lynda Tyler, and nephew Paul, (Mary) Neubauer.
Michael began his teaching career in Brantford Ontario at W. Ross Macdonald School for the Blind, moving to Whitby and continuing as teacher, Vice Principal, Principal and finally serving as a Consultant for the Arts at the Durham Catholic District School Board until his retirement. He was the founding president of the Durham Secondary Unit, OECTA.
A beautiful visual artist, Michael was both leader and member of the PineRidge Arts Council and workshop facilitator for both Durham region school boards. At the end of his formal career, he continued teaching art out of his Whitby home and as a volunteer in local retirement residences. Michael’s work was featured in the garden palette that he shared with our mom, The Station Gallery, juried shows, and gifted generously to family and friends.
Mike, dad, filled our Whitby home with music - piano principally, which he played by ear. Whether he was singing Harry Belafonte, playing classical, Jazz, or even a tune he did not know, you only needed to sing him a couple of notes and he could complement you handily. You did not have to have skill to join Michael on the piano; many a toddler plunked out notes and ‘poppy’ turned it into a beloved song. He was a frequent participant in the Bobcaygeon Fiddle Competitions as accompanist and was a self-taught violinist. He was proud to have performed on stage at Roy Thompson Hall.
Dad/Michael was the founder of ‘Senior Moments’ purveyors of fine Old Time Fiddle or Ceilidh music. The group met at our Whitby home once a month to practice and prepare for their many volunteer appearances. During those practices, our dear mama retreated to quieter climes at the back of the house.
Michael continued his membership with The Knights of Columbus, Chapter 4895 and was a long-time faithful parishioner and lector at St. John’s the Evangelist church, Whitby. You counted yourself blessed to be on dad’s/poppy 2 AM prayer list.
The funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday June 11, at 10:30 AM St. John’s the Evangelist church. To honour COVID protocols, the family will hold a second mass and celebration of Michael’s life when restrictions are reduced.
Attendance at Friday’s mass will be offered online via wctownfuneralchapel.com
We will miss Michael’s laughter, his monkey business, his oft repeated jokes, his music, his faith, his sense of fun and his love.
Donations to The Yonge Street Mission, (YSM), will be gratefully accepted in lieu of flowers.

My family and I are so sorry to hear of Michael's sudden passing. I always enjoyed running into him and Judy around our neighborhood and sharing a laugh. He was an inspiration, always active, cheerful and busy. We have several of his prints on the walls of our home which we will continue to treasure. He taught our kids art for many years and I know it had a big positive impact on them. Our deepest condolences to Judy and the rest of Michael's family at this difficult time. Joe, Lynda, Keira, and Erin.

I just heard of the passing of Mike and I would like to offer my condolence to his family. I have known Mike since the early years when we use to prepare the fields for the annual track and field events for our respective schools and a follow-up BBQ at Joe Cooper’s home in Whitby. Michael Jack was a gifted and good man and I admired him for his genuine kindness and friendship. May the God of love welcome him home!

My sincere condolences to the Jack family. My fondest memories from St. Christopher's are of Mr. Jack - his great sense of humour and how he was able to connect with us kids. Instead of feeling embarrassed when all I could sing was harmony to the notes he was playing during an audition, he encouraged me and made me laugh. Because of him, this shy kid found the confidence to perform in the school musicals and had the best time ever. Thank you, Mr. Jack.

Our deepest condolences to Judy and family in the tremendously sad loss of Mike, also known with great affection as Poppy, to our two boys, Camron and Ethan. This comes as such a shock to us and know Mike’s passing will be felt widely and to so many. His generous, generous spirit and actions, his warmth and incredible ways of sharing his gifts and igniting others to explore their creative side is one of the main traits he gave to this life on earth and will continue to work on in many magical ways. I will always remember how he embraced my two boys into the folds of his music and their experience with Poppy, beginning as toddlers, led to a talented fiddler and pianist, as well as a trumpeter in our home for years to come. Nanny and Poppy attended many a recital and Poppy always created a jam session whenever they visited:) Mike’s art pieces which he gifted to me over many years were finally framed and hung when our home was renovated. This took place right before covid hit, and so it was our plan to surprise Poppy, as soon as visits would be allowed, to reveal his artwork throughout our home. We will miss seeing his expression but hope he is smiling from the beautiful universe in approval of our display of his incredible work. We will really miss you. Karen, Jan, Camron and Ethan xoxoxoxo
