Condolence: I'm only just hearing about Mr. DeSouza now. This is quite saddening. I was in his grade 9 English class the year he retired. He had a wonderful sense of humour and taught English in a way that wasn't boring. He didn't lecture, he didn't make us take notes. He interacted with his students and taught in a way where he was basically having a conversation with his students. I fondly remember him writing sex on the board during the first few minutes of class. Everyone settled down and stopped talking. Then he began class and erased the board. Truely a unique memory. I will always remember Mr. DeSouza. May he rest in peace.

Condolence: TIMES NOT FORGOTTEN (For Charles) Alas, Time does not stand still, It will gather us all at its own will. The weak, the strong, the good and the bad, Son, daughter, brother, sister, mom, and dad. In life, you laughed and, yes, you cried, But like all too many, a long life denied. Your time you spent on this cruel earth Which now, at times, is devoid of mirth. For loved ones, who too soon do leave, They leave our hearts and souls to grieve. And in our minds, we still can see What was denied for you to be. Tears from so many sad eyes do flow, But in our minds, the "eye" dost know That your memories are forever where Our love for you is meant to share. Jim Riga (June 22, 2017)

Condolence: Dear Alice, Jennifer & Jason. I taught and coached with Chuck for many years at Cardinal Newman. My fondest memories of Chuck was our making it to OFSAA with the Girls' Soccer Team after many years of trying. It was a real pleasure. Chuck was, first and foremost, a consummate English teacher. My daughter was in one of Chuck's classes when she attended Newman back in the '90s and has very positive memories of her Grade 11 English class. I had no idea he'd been ill and regret not having seen him more since he retired. He had a long and distinguished career, making the transition from Montreal to Toronto as so many did with grace, sacrifice and determination. My condolences to you all. I will miss him. Joe D'Aquila

Condolence: Chuck was a wonderful soul. He was a fabulous educator, coach, friend and colleague. Countless students remember his dynamic English classes with fondness. He was an inspiring coach, with his specialty field hockey. He proudly shared food of his culture at Newman's One Community luncheons. He roasted many a mean hot dog at ScarTrek BBQs. Chuck was a very supportive colleague who spoke his mind when it was needed but also offered quiet and gentle advice and guidance to staff and students alike. He touched many lives. His performances on stage in teacher skits will not be forgotten. He generously shared daily drives with his great friend Nic Labriola. No doubt he will be discussing Shakespeare with Mrs. Mills up above. He will live on in all of us from the Newman community

Condolence: Mr. De Souza was my first English teacher at Cardinal Newman back in 2005. I wasn't the best, nor most attentive students in class. I would always fall asleep and never live up to the expectations and promise he saw in me. I only ever did enough to get by, and yet when final exams came around he showed a kindness that most others wouldn't afford to me. I had gotten the time of my exam wrong and showed up to it about an hour late with only 30 minutes to go. Where Mr. De Souza could have just let me do as much as possible in 30 minutes, he instead let me finish the exam in its entirety despite finishing 50 minutes over the allotted time. I've never forgotten that kindness. Rest in paradise Mr. De Souza

Condolence: Mr. DeSouza was such a kind man, coach and teacher. He knew when to step in with his students and when to let us make mistakes we could learn from. He had a great sense of humour and such compassion. I remember when I was in Grade 9 and was caught at the Maple Leafs Rally on National Skip Day. Mr. DeSouza had to call my Mother to tell her that I had detention for skipping. My Mom had already grounded me and took away all my privileges and Mr. DeSouza being the kind man he was told her he thought I had been punished enough. My Mom told him "No, you give her the same punishment you are giving the other students". When Mr. DeSouza hung up the phone he looked at me with such kindness, smiled and said "You don't get away with anything at home, do you?" and told me to just go back to class...with no detention. He showed me the power of grace that day. I thank him for it. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.
